So, tonight my wife, daughter, and I are watching The love bug . It's a fun show... and oddly, I feel that it's a little more Oppo than most of the car movies made today. A quote from the first 5 minutes:

Mr. Thorndyke kicks Herbie.

Jim Douglas: What's that for?

Mr. Thorndyke: I beg your pardon!

Jim Douglas: Well, why don't you let the little car alone?

Mr. Thorndyke: Are you presuming to tell me what to do in my own establishment?

Jim Douglas: Ok, I'm out of line. It just bugs me to see somebody abusing a decent piece of machinery.

Today, we see the Beetle as a classic. Enthusiasts love them, and you'll see plenty at car shows.

Back in 1968, however, they were anything but that. They were about as beige as a Camry is today. The body style hadn't been changed in a decade, and they were about as affordable as a Fiesta is today. A lot of people still scorned them as being a product of 'the bad guys,' and American cars were about the biggest they've ever been, making the Beetle seem miniscule.

This leads me to wonder: If The love bug were created today, what would the car be? I'm not talking about a remake; we've already seen what that looked like. I'm talking about an alternate reality where The love bug never existed in the first place.

If The love bug were created today, what would the car be?

I'm guessing Prius or Smart. Everyone knows what they are, and they are not known for their speed.

And I fucking love that movie. The theme song is playing in my head right now.

Those are good thoughts. They're also widely maligned, like the Beetle was at the time.

I think they'd use the Mirage, it's about the same size as a Beetle, priced about the same (inflation adjusted), is from an Axis make, and is a car that's often scorned by car enthusiasts and also known as slow and underpowered. The "fine piece of machinery" qualifier might not fit though.

Not a bad thought. I can picture that.

there are some amazing cars in the racing scenes. Buddy Hacket sounds like his on some serious weed during the movie as well.

My had a 1968 Beetle that he had restored and made to look like herbie.

Except we had red crash bars instead of the chrome bumper and red steelies rather than the dog dish hubcaps

It somehow survived after my dad had sold it for many years somehow and now a 16 year old kid is going to restore to be his first car. The cycle continues.
